Trump and Putin Claim Success at Alaska Summit – What Comes Next for Zelensky?
Yesterday, former US President Donald Trump greeted Russian President Vladimir Putin on Alaskan soil, with smiles and handshakes marking the start of their talks on Ukraine. The pair walked down a red carpet into discussions focused on what they called “pursuing peace.”
No deal emerged to halt the war, but Trump appeared to shift his stance—now emphasizing “lasting peace” without first demanding a ceasefire. Analysts say this position aligns more closely with Moscow’s view and is likely to please Putin.
In the aftermath, both leaders declared the meeting a success. Putin described the summit as “very useful,” stressing the need to tackle what he called the “root causes” of the Ukraine conflict.
Reports suggest Putin floated a proposal: Ukraine would surrender full control of the eastern Donetsk region—currently around 70% occupied by Russia—in exchange for freezing the front lines. Trump, meanwhile, hinted that other concessions might also be on the table, though he gave no details.
Attention now turns to Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, who was excluded from these talks. He is scheduled to meet Trump in Washington on Monday, hoping for a calmer discussion than the tense Oval Office encounter earlier this year with Trump and Vice President JD Vance.
European leaders are also set to gather again under their “coalition of the willing” banner, seeking a united strategy on the path toward peace.
