Trump’s Ceasefire Shift Raises Concerns in Kyiv and Across Europe

US President Donald Trump’s latest remarks on the Ukraine conflict have unsettled leaders in Kyiv and European capitals. Ahead of talks, Trump had suggested he wanted to see an immediate ceasefire. But during discussions, he shifted position, moving away from that demand.

The change in tone is seen as a setback for Ukraine. For months, Russia has insisted that any halt in fighting must be tied to a broader political settlement—one that reflects Moscow’s interests. In practice, this often means pressure on Ukraine to accept terms that could be viewed as a form of surrender.

By echoing that stance, even indirectly, Trump has caused unease among Ukraine’s allies. President Volodymyr Zelensky is set to meet Trump on Monday, but officials in Kyiv fear the US position may now lean closer to Moscow’s line than before. (Credit BBC)
